The Judicial Education Center's ethics exercises are designed to illustrate the principles contained New Mexico Code of Judicial Conduct. It is important to know how to respond quickly to the unexpected. Each scenario presents ethical problems for you to either read or view on video(*). Scene from Ex Parte Communications videoAfter each problem, several questions are posed, asking you how the conduct conforms with or violates the Code. Try to answer these questions, and then compare your answers with those provided by our experts on the Code.

CAUTION: While we have made every effort to provide clear and correct answers to the problems posed by these exercises, ethical questions are complex and subject to varying interpretations. We cannot anticipate in these examples every situation that may arise. Some real situations that look similar to those presented here may actually involve different facts that would produce different answers. If you have a real problem we urge you to read the Code of Judicial Conduct and commentary directly to look for the answer. If problems still remain, you should consult the Advisory Committee on the Code of Judicial Conduct for guidance on your precise question.
