All litigants, defendants, and other court users have a right to due process, procedural fairness, and equal access to justice regardless of their English language skills. The use of effective language interpreters, including sign language interpreters, allows for full participation within the judicial system by all parties. Court interpreters play a role in ensuring fairness, and they are subject to their own ethical code. At the end of this webcast, judges will be able to: (1) identify ethical code provisions that govern interpreters; (2) develop best practices for effective use of courtroom interpreters; and (2) adhere to procedural and legal requirements when utilizing interpretation services. The National Judicial College designed this webcast for judges in the judicial and executive branches. The National Judicial College’s faculty member Judge Tracie Todd has a unique perspective because prior to joining the bench, she served as a court interpreter.
